About Us

WelcomeGet Directions

On behalf of the staff and congregation it is a privilege for me to welcome you to FUMC of Corinth. We consider worship to be the center of our life together and are delighted that you chose to visit us today online! We hope that you will come join us and worship with us.

This page will give you an overview of some of the ministries at our church. Each ministry is designed to enable us to more fully live the vision of our church - "Servants of Christ for our Community". It is our goal to disciple and send forth committed servants of Christ into our community.

Our Mission, therefore, is to provide each person God sends our way a "Place to Stand". Through Christ centered worship, study, fellowship, and service opportunities, we believe that each of us will find the spiritual formation, training, support, and encouragement we need to fulfill the call of God on our lives.

First United Methodist Church invites you to come walk the journey of faith with us. If we can answer any questions or serve you in any way, please feel free to call on me.

In His Name,

Bud

Dr. Prentiss M. Gordon, Jr.
Pastor

Congregational Care

Jesus' ministry was not reserved for temple or synagogue. Though by right he could have enjoyed the privileges of royalty, he took upon himself the form of a servant. His compassion knew no bounds.

First United Methodist Church members who serve in congregational care are reaching out to shut-ins, those hospitalized, and nursing home residents. The opportunities for service include visitation, reading, styling hair for female nursing home residents, distributing church bulletins and Upper Room devotion publications, or simply demonstrating a Barnabas spirit of encouragement.

With the addition of more volunteers willing to become servants, we will be able to share the love of Christ in more ways and to more people. Congregational care is not limited to current projects. If you feel God moving you to reach out to people within the congregation or our community, contact the pastor on where to begin sharing God's gift of love.

This is the message you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. 1 John 3:11

Missions

First United Methodist Church is very involved in missions both locally and abroad. Some of our involvement includes:

THE LIGHTHOUSE FOUNDATION: Church members serve on the Board of Directors for this Corinth-area outreach ministry. A portion of our missions budget, and direct contributions of our members, help financially. An FUMC family "work night" in December helps in preparations for the annual Christmas Toy Drive.

THE A.M.E.N. FOOD PANTRY: In cooperation with other churches, FUMC members serve on the Board of Directors and contribute numerous volunteer hours. FUMC, along with individual donations, supports this ministry with a financial commitment. An annual "Push for Peanut Butter" campaign provides the pantry with much needed Peanut Butter.

BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB: The Corinth chapter of the Boys and Girls Club is supported by FUMC through members who serve in leadership and tutoring positions. The children of the club are encouraged to participate in FUMC's summer Vacation Bible School.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY: Church members serve on the local chapter of the Board of Directors and provide leadership, financial aid, and volunteer hours for local housing projects.

TORNADO RELIEF: Volunteers from FUMC have given a day or more cleaning up after devastating tornados in Mississippi and Tennessee. These volunteers have provided man-hours to clean up debris and deliver paper supplies, Coke products, and water donated by Corinth-area businesses.

GIRDWOOD, ALASKA: FUMC's support of Reverend Jim Doepkin and family in their ministry in Girwood, Alaska, continues to grow. Our hopes are to send a team to Alaska to help with the building project.

MISSION CORINTH: Church members come together as needed to help with local clean-up, construction, renovation and various other projects for church members and or community members.

Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations... Matthew 28:19

Women's Ministry

Our purpose as the organized group known as the Women's Ministry, is to be a community of women seeking to know GOD and to experience freedom as whole persons through JESUS CHRIST; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.

We work and minister in the following ways:

  • Bible Study - two small groups with various meeting times
  • Mission Study - four fellowship lunches
  • Lenten Lunches - prepare and serve lunch for a community-wide time of devotion during the Lenten season

As a group we have financially contributed to the following:

  • Penza Russian Initiative
  • Storm Relief
  • Ellen Warriner Memorial Cabin
  • Seminary Fund
  • Alaskan Mission
  • A.M.E.N. Food Pantry
  • World Hunger Offering
  • White Christmas Basket Fund
  • Wesley Foundation at Northeast Mississippi Community College
  • Little Blessings Daycare at FUMC
  • Birthday dollars offering
  • Membership and Development offering
  • Decorating of the Fellowship Hall for Advent

We assist other work areas in the church when needed and support the emphasis of the church. We endeavor to provide Christian fellowship for the women of the church and to minister to the needs of our members.

Any woman may become a member who verbally states her desire to be a part and participate in the purpose of the organization. It is our desire to form additional small groups for creative, supportive fellowship emphasizing prayer and in-depth Bible study. We challenge you to join us in practicing our faith in personal and societal relationships.

Who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves... for I am among you as one who serves. Luke 22:27

College Ministry

The College Ministry of First United Methodist Church helps us to maintain contact with all of our college students. We have a "College List" which includes students' names, addresses, E-mail addresses, phone numbers, and birth dates. Similar information is also included for the parents of each student on the "College List."

The adult Sunday school classes at FUMC adopt college students for as long as the students are in school. The classes pray for their adopted college students and keep in close contact with the students through cards, letter, exam care packages, birthday "happies", and holiday surprises. The classes periodically mail a copy of "The Upper Room" to each student so that they can have daily devotional material. The classes also invite the students to attend their Sunday school classes when they are at home.

The FUMC College Ministry feels strongly that we need to extend the long arm of Christian love to our college students as they being this very important new phase of their life.

...Preparing God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up, until we all reach unity in the faith... Ephesians 4:12

Music Ministry

The music ministry of FUMC of Corinth is composed of a number of ensembles that lead the church in worship throughout the year. We are fortunate to have music opportunities for every age church member and for a wide variety of musical interests and abilities. Groups that meet weekly include the Chancel Choir, children's choirs and Sanctuary hand bells, and Transformers hand bells.

The choirs and bells lead in the weekly worship services and present special programs throughout the church year. The adult choir provides music for services throughout Holy Week, including either a Service of Shadows on Good Friday or a Maundy-Thursday Service. All of the ensembles participate in the joyous celebration of Easter. The children plan special programs at Christmas and the end of the school year. All of the church musicians prepare a musical Christmas present for the community that is presented the week before Christmas.

Please come join us in the ministry of music to grow in your faith and to share your musical gifts with the Body of Christ.

I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. 1 Corinthians 14:15

Little Blessings - Weekday Preschool Ministry

"Little Blessings" is our weekday Christian nursery and preschool program offered at FUMC for ages infant through 4-year olds as well as an after school program. Our mission at Little Blessings is to minister to families by offering a quality child-care and learning center in a Christian environment.

Our trained staff is committed to serving parents and their children by providing the following programs in both full-time and part-time care:

  • "Hand-on" experiences that nurture the total development of young children in an environment that encourages choice.
  • "Wee Learn", an exciting Christ-centered curriculum that offers children a fun, group learning experience with others of their own age.
  • Positive opportunities for children to build relationships, enhance self-esteem, and discover the joy of learning.
  • Extra curricular act ivies such as music, arts and computers

Train up a child in the way that he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6

Emerging Ministries

As the Body of Christ grows, so do the ministries of the church. In the Emerging Ministries, we are focused on ways to improve current ministries and to add new ministries, when appropriate, to meet the needs of a diverse congregation. jesus said in Matthew 11:28-30, "Come to me, all who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my load is light."

God's house is a hospital for sick souls and our hope is that FUMC can specialize in providing the ministries, discipleship, and Christian growth that we all need to be healed and become closer to Him.

Some of the ministry areas on which we are facing include inviting ministries where we hope to create a welcoming and caring environment for those who visit with us, New Members Ministries where new members learn more about this congregation and are plugging them into the work of the church, Senior Adult Ministries, Compassionate Congregation Ministries, and "Every Member in Service" Commitments.

For the body is not one member, but many. 1 Corinthians 12:14

Student Ministries

The student Ministry of FUMC is based on scripture, so that God will shine through in everything we do. We try to develop a relationship with every student that walks through the doors of our church. We earnestly hope that teenagers will catch a glimpse of God's plan for them and that we can create a Ministry Community together.

SUNDAY SCHOOL - For Jr./Sr. High students starting at 9:00 AM. Between classes, homework, sports, music, friends, family time, and other hobbies.. life can really be draining! That's why you need "Soul Fuel" - the stuff you need to stay connected with God, to get spiritually recharged, and be energized and empowered for the situations life throws your way. Come check us out as we study devotions that will keep your tank full.

SNL (SUNDAY NIGHT LIVE) - For Jr./Sr. High students starting at 5:45 PM. We begin our night with a wonderful supper provided by our parents. Our study time follows this fellowship time as Jr. and Sr. High students split and dive into our core belief Bible study series. The study attempts to help you answer some basic questions... "Who is God? What does he do? and What's he like?" We're not trying to put God into a box, but we want you to see God as He has revealed Himself through His Word and as He reveals Himself in your lives.

ENCOUNTER- Jr./Sr. High students gather on Wednesday night beginning at 6:00 PM. Whether we want to accept it, ignore it, or use it - the reality is that our kids are growing under the influence of a media saturated culture. During Encounter, we will engage you in Biblical discussion about what you are watching and hearing. Through these discussions you will be able to see how the Gospel's presence or absence is revealed in popular culture. It is our prayer that you will develop a Biblical filter that shines the light of Jesus' Truth on media messages and encourages you to live authentically beyond the church walls.

Jesus never presented His ministry or following Him as a complicated issue. He simply said, "Follow me." That's what we are trying to do. We don't know all the answers, but we know someone who does. Jesus said it all came down to this... Love God and love others. Simple. Jesus always made it simple.. Not easy, but simple.

Now the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant, even Jesus our Lord, equip you in every good thing to do His will, working in us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to who me be the glory forever and ever. Amen. Hebrews 13:20-21

Brief FUMC History

Methodists in this section of North Mississippi were on the Tishomingo Circuit from 1837 until 1857. Corinth was made a Station Church and in that year the church members bought, for one thousand dollars, a lot on which to build their first house of worship. The lot comprised the north half of city block 125, located east of Court Square. This lot was the site of Methodist churches for 102 years - from 1858-1960.

Three church buildings were erected on it. The first one, completed in 1858, was a two-story formed structure. During the War it was used as a stable and was greatly abused. This building was destroyed by fire in 1868. Immediately another frame church was erected and was used until 1891, at which time the first brick building was contracted for. It was completed in 1892.

In 1895 this first brick building was remodeled. A large wing was added on the south, memorial windows were placed on three sides of the building, a pipe organ was purchased and a furnace was installed. This church was ready for occupancy in 1906.

During the ministry of the Reverend W. C. Newman, a movement was made to start raising funds for a more adequate building. Funds for this purpose came slowly and it was about 20 years before dreams of a spacious edifice materialized. While the Reverend J. T. Humphries was pastor (1952-1959) plans were set up, a large portion of money needed was raised and work was begun on the present church in 1958. The magnificent structure is located on the Northwest corner of Fillmore and Bunch streets and was completed in 1960. The Reverend Roy Grissom was the minister at that time.
